Desi Calendar 2026: Complete Guide

What Is the Desi Calendar?

The desi calendar, also called the Punjabi calendar or Bikrami calendar, is the traditional calendar of the Indian subcontinent. It is a solar calendar, which means it follows the movement of the sun, and its year is about 365 days long. That is why desi months fall in roughly the same season every year. The monsoon arrives with Sawan, the fierce heat comes with Jeth, and the cold settles in with Poh, an order that has not changed for centuries.

The roots of the desi calendar lie in farming life. When agriculture was the foundation of the economy, keeping exact track of the seasons was a matter of life and death. When to sow the seed, when to harvest the crop, when to tend the cattle: the desi months answered all of these questions. Over time, the calendar became part of religious and cultural life as well. In Sikh tradition it takes the special form of the Nanakshahi calendar, while in everyday Punjabi life the Bikrami months are the most widely used.

The calendar's epoch is the Bikrami era, traditionally dated to 57 BCE and linked to King Vikramaditya. That is why a desi year number runs about 57 years ahead of the Gregorian one: in Gregorian 2026, the desi year is 2083.

Today's desi date is updated daily on our website's homepage, where you can see the desi, Urdu, and Hindi dates alongside the Gregorian date.

How the Desi Year Is Counted

In the desi calendar, the new year begins with Chet, between March and April. That is why spring is the symbol of the desi new year. The crops have ripened, the weather is pleasant, and you can feel a new cycle of life beginning. Baisakhi, celebrated in Vaisakh, is in fact the festival of this new agricultural year.

Because the new year begins in spring, many Punjabi families treat Chet as a time of fresh starts, settling old accounts and beginning new ones, much like January is treated elsewhere.

One easy thing to remember is that the first day of every desi month is called سنگراند. The Sangrand dates for each month can be found on our Sangrand dates page.

Difference Between the Desi Calendar and the Islamic Calendar

This is a question people ask often, and the answer matters because both calendars are used side by side in Pakistan and India.

The Islamic calendar is lunar, meaning it follows the cycle of the moon. Its year is 354 or 355 days long, about 11 days shorter than the solar year. That is why Ramadan, the two Eids, and Muharram arrive about 11 days earlier on the Gregorian calendar each year and keep drifting through the seasons. Sometimes Ramadan falls in summer, sometimes in winter.

The desi calendar is solar, with a 365-day year. Its months therefore stay tied to the seasons. Sawan will always bring the rains, and Poh will always bring the cold. This is its greatest strength, and it is why farmers still rely on it today.

Difference Between the Desi Calendar and the Gregorian Calendar

Interestingly, both the desi and Gregorian calendars are solar, yet they differ in a few fundamental ways:

  1. Start of the year: The Gregorian year begins in January, while the desi year begins with Chet, around mid-March.
  2. Start of the month: A Gregorian month starts on the 1st, while a desi month starts around the middle of the previous Gregorian month.
  3. Cultural role: The Gregorian calendar is used for official and office work, while the desi calendar is tied to farming, religious, and cultural life.

What Are Sangrand, Masya, and Puranmashi?

The desi calendar also has special days linked to the phases of the moon, and these carry religious importance:

  • سنگراند: The first day of each desi month. In Sikh tradition, gurdwaras hold special programs on this day.
  • مسیا (نئے چاند کی رات): The new moon night, when the moon is not visible.
  • پورن ماشی (پورے چاند کا دن): The full moon night.

The complete lists of these dates are on our dedicated pages, for example Masya dates and Puranmashi dates.

Why the Desi Calendar Still Matters Today

Some people think the desi calendar is only the memory of the older generation, but the reality is the opposite. Farmers in Punjab still decide when to sow wheat by watching Katak and Maghar. Wedding dates are often worked out by family elders according to the desi months. Religious festivals like Baisakhi, Lohri, Diwali, and Holi are all tied to the desi calendar or closely related ones.

Even city dwellers who live by the Gregorian calendar check desi dates for weddings, religious observances, and ancestral rites. The calendar survives because it is woven into how Punjab marks time itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

When does the desi new year begin?

The desi new year begins with the month of Chet, which falls around mid-March. Baisakhi is celebrated in Vaisakh to mark the occasion.

Are the desi calendar and the Nanakshahi calendar the same?

Both belong to Punjab and both are solar, but the Nanakshahi calendar is a standardized calendar formally adopted by Sikh religious institutions in 2003, while the desi or Bikrami calendar is the centuries-old traditional form used in everyday life.

Why do desi months fall in the same season every year?

Because the desi calendar is solar and its year is 365 days long, its months stay tied to the sun and the seasons. In contrast, the months of the lunar Islamic calendar drift through the seasons.
